ThermaBlok® Aerogel is a revolutionary advancement in thermal technology. The material has the highest insulation value of any known material with the lowest thermal conductivity value (0.015W/mk) and is now available for use in building construction and energy efficiency retrofits. Most heat transmission through walls is passed directly through masonry, block wall or stud frame to the internal facia such as drywall. This process is known as “thermal bridging”.
Thermablok Aerogel works by breaking this thermal bridging link whilst being totally breathable, ensuring a healthy, durable working building with a natural ability to repel liquid whilst allowing the passage and release of moisture vapour.
Thermablok Aerogel is hydrophobic and is therefore not affected by moisture or age, and provides major energy savings for the life of the building. A single 10mm thickness of Thermablok Aerogel Insulation Blanket increases the insulation factor by up to 67%.
Thermablok Aerogel is available in a number of different products. Self adhesive Thermablok Strips can be applied in seconds to a building’s substrate for localised insulation. In addition Thermablok Aerogel Insulation Blanket material offers a complete and flexible coverage, whilst Thermablok Aerogel Magnesium Silicate IWI /IFI Board Systems offer a composite rigid board solution for direct fix to both vertical and horizontal assemblies.

Known as aerogel (also referred to as “frozen smoke”) this amazing substance has been difficult to adapt to most uses because of its fragility. Thermablok material however overcomes this by using a unique fiber to suspend a proprietary formula of aerogel so that it can be bent or compressed while still retaining its amazing insulation properties.
The use of space age aerogel composite technology, used in the Space Shuttle and NASA Mars exploration, has produced a material that not only has the lowest thermal conductivity rating of any thermal insulation product known (0.014W/mk – 0.015W/mk), but has exceptional acoustical properties as well. Adding a strip of Thermablok Insulation on each side of the timber / steel stud not only gives fantastic thermal insulation but signifigantly reduces sound transmission or flanking paths. ie. the mechanical link the stud creates through the wall.
(When incorporated with the sister company Acoustiblok UK Ltd – a single layer of 3mm Acoustiblok Sound Isolation Membrane onto a 100mm timber / metal stud wall yields an Sound Transmission Class of 57dB (the virtual equivalent of 600mm of poured concrete, STC 58dB) far exceeding Building Regulations.
While sounding too good to be true, for something so simple to produce such incredible results, the figures are substantiated by the U.S Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and J. M. Laboratory, which compared two identical (metal stud/gypsum board) walls: One wall with one strip of the material on each 2×4 stud edge (one side only) and the second wall without the material. A 6mm thickness of ThermablokSP Aerogel strips on the studs alone increased the insulation factor by 30% and a 9mm thickness increased the insulation factor by 42%.
