Installation Guide for Thermablok Aerogel Insulation Strips
Thermablok Aerogel Insulation Strips may be installed either on the exterior or interior side of the wall framing. Insulate the full length of framing members. Apply to all wall, floor or ceiling framing edges: headers, footers, trusses, window and door frames, floor joist and roof rafters.

It is suggested that Thermablok be applied to the exterior side of the assembly if:

    • You have access to entire building envelope, between floor joists and other areas not accessible from the inside.
    • With metal framing, you are able to create a warm stud, preventing condensation.
    • Cut and fit Thermablok 1-1/2″ wide encapsulated strips tight to any protrusions or interruptions to the insulation plane. Butt edges and ends of Thermablok thermal bridging barrier insulation tightly to each other without gaps.
    • Remove release backing from adhesive tape on Thermablok thermal bridging barrier insulation, and apply directly to either metal or wood framing. For wood framing you may use a staple hammer with applicable length staples.
    • Immediately following application of self-adhering Thermablok, press thermal bridging barrier strip firmly and uniformly to substrate surfaces to insure adhesion.
    • Installation of covering materials to wall, roof, sheathing, plaster lathe or gypsum wallboard should be carried out in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines.
    • Plan and co-ordinate the Thermablok Aerogel insulation work to minimize the generation of off-cuts and waste. Re-use Thermablok Aerogel off-cuts to the maximum extent possible.
    • Do not install self-adhering Thermablok thermal bridging barrier insulation when temperature or weather conditions are detrimental to successful installation.
    • Thermablok non-encapsulated strips (aerogel composite material without polymer wrapping) attaches with an appropriate construction grade adhesive per the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions, or with any appropriate substrate fastener. Observe handling precautions outlined in our Safety Data Sheet.
Installation Guide for Thermablok Aerogel Insulation Blanket

Before you begin:

  • Download and read our Safety Data Sheet for complete health and safety information. Long sleeved, long legged work clothes that cover any exposed skin are recommended when handling the blanket material which is not encased in the plastic sleeve.
  • Thermablok Aerogel Blanket material should ideally be cut using either a hot knife, electric scissors or even a pair of forged steel straight cut tin snips or similar. The material can be dusty, and it is recommended that standard levels of PPE are observed with gloves, safety glasses, and dust mask be worn when handling material.
  • Plan and co-ordinate the thermal bridging barrier insulation work to minimize the generation of off-cuts and waste. Re-use thermal bridging barrier off-cuts to the maximum extent possible.
  • Do not install Thermablok Aerogel products and new finishes over walls that have deteriorated from moisture, insects, etc. Repair unsound walls prior to proceeding. Any textured or damaged walls should be prepared by means of a thin alkaline parge coat to offer a continual and even contact surface area for the aerogel as well as providing a further hostile environment to mould and bacterial growth.
  • It is also advisable and seen as good practice to treat all existing surfaces with an anti microbial surface wash treatment to eliminate all mould spores.
  • Pre-cut lengths in work staging area. Thermablok Aerogel Blanket material should ideally be cut using either a hot knife, electric scissors or even a pair of forged steel straight cut tin snips or similar. Observe handling precautions per the Safety Data Sheet.
  • Thermablok Aerogel Blanket material can be temporarily spot glued in place with an appropriate construction grade adhesive following the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Appropriate masonry or sheathing fasteners equipped with 1″ (25mm) dia. mushroom caps; spaced 12″ (30.5cm) to 16″ (40 cm) in any direction, can be used to attach the Thermablok Aerogel Blanket and / or Thermablok Aerogel IWI Board to masonry.
  • Take care to insure the edges of adjacent sections of Thermablok Aerogel are tightly butted together.
  • Cut Thermablok to fit tightly around windows and doors. Cut flush to edge of framing.
  • Thermablok Aerogel Insulation Blanket can be installed directly beneath radiant heat floor systems or conventional insulation materials and finishing floor systems to increase thermal efficiency. Simply roll out and spot tack material into place.
  • When installing Thermablok Aerogel Blanket onto an existing concrete slab floor assembly or screed we would also recommend a plastic lining (DPM) is well lapped and taped above and below the insulation. This will prevent the screed coming into contact with the aerogel but will also help mitigate dust and will actually help with the flow of the screed.
Installation Guide for Thermablok Aerogel ThermaSlim (IWI) Wall & Ceiling Board

Before you begin:

  • Download and read our Safety Data Sheet for complete health and safety information. Long sleeved, long legged work clothes that cover any exposed skin are recommended when handling the blanket material which is not encased in the plastic sleeve.
  • Establish if a fully breathable, semi-breathable or non-breathable system is required before installation.
  • Thermablok Aerogel Magnesium Boards should be cut using a skill saw however can be cut using a handsaw if needed with the aide of an additional board to compress the Aerogel insulation to prevent tearing. The material can be dusty, and it is recommended that standard levels of PPE are observed with gloves, safety glasses, and dust mask be worn when handling material.
  • Plan and Coordinate the thermal bridging barrier insulation work to minimize the generation of off-cuts and waste.
  • Do not install Thermablok Aerogel products and any new finishes over walls that have deteriorated from moisture, insects, mould etc. Repair and treat unsound walls prior to proceeding.
Installation Guide for Thermablok Aerogel ThermaSlim (IFI) Floor Panel

Before you begin:

  • Download and read our Safety Data Sheet for complete health and safety information. Long sleeved, long legged work clothes that cover any exposed skin are recommended when handling the blanket material which is not encased in the plastic sleeve.
  • Establish if a fully breathable, semi-breathable or non-breathable system is required before installation.
  • Thermablok Aerogel ThermaSlim IFI Impact Panels should be cut using a skill saw however can be cut using a handsaw if needed with the aide of an additional board behind the foil encapsulation to compress the Aerogel insulation to prevent tearing. All cuts can be easily taped with a foil tape as provided. The material can be dusty, and it is recommended that standard levels of PPE are observed with gloves, safety glasses and dust mask be worn when handling all materials.
  • Plan and Coordinate the thermal bridging barrier insulation work to minimize the generation of off-cuts and waste.
  • Thermablok Aerogel products should be fitted onto a level, clean and prepared subfloor which is good condition and in accordance with good practice. Repair and treat unsound areas prior to proceeding. Any damaged areas should be prepared to offer a continual and even contact surface area.
  • It is also advisable and seen as good practice to treat all existing surfaces with an anti microbial surface wash treatment to eliminate all mould spores.
  • Thermablok Aerogel ThermaSlim IFI Impact Panels should be installed with a staggered junction. Tightly abut the panels to each other and tape over the joins with a high grade foil tape as provided.
  • Thermablok Aerogel ThermaSlim IFI Impact Panels can be cut as detailed above to create a full insulation layer up to the perimeter of the floor area, again following the principle of a staggered junction. As an additional measure and if tolerances allow, a small strip of Thermablok Aerogel Blanket (encapsulated) or ThermaSlim IFI Panel can be installed vertically at the perimeter behind the skirting board to further increase the thermal resistance at the wall / floor junction.
  • Once the installation is finished, check the area is completely covered, level and tape jointed. At this point the chosen floor finish can be installed. Seek guidance from the individual manufacturers of the chosen floor finish to establish correct procedure of installation.
